Nepheral's software is published under the Business Source License 1.1. You may use, change and share it for any purpose, running nodes for profit included, except offering it to others as a competing commercial service. Each version becomes Apache 2.0 four years after it is first published. TheTerms of Use explain it in plain words; the text below is what governs.

Parameters
Licensor: Javier Hernandez, an individual, together with his
successors and assigns.
Licensed Work: Nepheral, version 0.3.0, and each subsequent version
of Nepheral published by Licensor under this License.
The Licensed Work is (c) 2026 Javier Hernandez.
The Licensed Work was developed in private before its
first public release. No copy of any version of the
Licensed Work was distributed to the public under any
license before that version's first public release
under this License. Every publicly available version
of the Licensed Work is governed by this License.
Additional Use Grant: Subject to the exclusion stated below, You may use,
copy, modify, create derivative works of, and
redistribute the Licensed Work for any purpose,
including production use.
For the avoidance of doubt, none of the following is a
Competing Use, and each is expressly permitted:
(a) Operating one or more Nepheral nodes that join the
Nepheral network, relay Shamir shares, serve
inference to other participants of that network,
participate in lottery selection, and earn, hold,
redeem or transfer contribution credits or other
on-chain units of the Nepheral network, whether or
not You do so for profit and whether or not You
operate at commercial scale. Participating in the
network as designed is the intended use of the
Licensed Work, and compensation received from the
Nepheral network itself for doing so does not make
that participation a Competing Use.
(b) Internal use within Your own organization,
including use by Your employees and contractors,
and including use on infrastructure You rent from
a third party.
(c) Personal, research, educational, evaluation and
non-production use.
(d) Contributing to the Licensed Work, and publishing
forks, patches, analyses, benchmarks and security
research.
Excluded from this grant (each a "Competing Use"): You
may not, without a separate commercial license from
Licensor, offer the Licensed Work, or a work
substantially derived from it, to third parties as a
commercial product or service where that product or
service:
(i) provides those third parties with the substantial
functionality of the Licensed Work as a hosted,
managed, embedded or white-labeled offering,
whether charged for directly, by subscription, by
usage, or bundled into other paid goods or
services; or
(ii) operates, or materially assists a third party in
operating, a network, ledger or credit system
that is derived from the Licensed Work and is
separate from, or competing with, the Nepheral
network, where units of value in that system are
sold, auctioned or otherwise exchanged for
consideration.
"Nepheral network" means the peer-to-peer network
whose chain state descends from the genesis block
recognised by Licensor and whose validator authority is
the key published by Licensor as NEPHERAL_TEAM_PUBKEY
in the Licensed Work, as either may be rotated by
Licensor from time to time.
Change Date: For each version of the Licensed Work, the fourth
anniversary of the date on which Licensor first made
that version publicly available.
This is the same event that the Terms below use as the
outside limit for conversion, so the two dates coincide
for every version. Where that date is uncertain or
disputed, the earliest date on which a copy of that
version was obtainable by the general public governs.
